Summary of this Book...
Alex is a top scientist in her field, but that field happens to be torture! When the information she's extracted implicates important people in crime, the powers that be decide to "retire" her. This awesome novel takes a credible, strong female protagonist through Hell and back as she tries not only to survive but also to achieve justice for herself and her dead mentor.

Along the way, she makes some surprising friends, and even maybe a little romance.
This type of Book is good for...
Anybody who loves strong, no-nonsense heroines and gritty realism.
I especially liked...
I liked that Alex isn't "superwoman", ie. she isn't the best fighter in the team, not the strongest person. Instead, she's the cleverest, and she uses her brains, dedication, and resourcefulness to overcome her enemies and save the day.
I didn't like...
Large elements of the plot and characters were clearly the same as in her previous bestseller, The Host. You had the same pair of brothers, one antagonistic and the other a love interest. They had the same character development, both becoming her friend by the end. The protagonist also had the same character development, fighting the brothers at first but then becoming their friends later. Alex began like Melanie Stryder and transformed into Wanderer by the end, if you follow me.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
Read more. Actually, I read it again. Twice. For me, a strong and satisfying resolution is the sign of a great book.
This Book made me feel...
Disappointed that there wasn't another book of the same high standard to read next. I ended up re-reading The Host instead.
The author of this Book...
Stephenie Meyer
I recommend this Book because...
It's much better written than Meyer's earlier books, like the Twilight series, and is very engaging and cathartic.
I don't recommend this Book because...
As I said before, huge elements of the plot and characters are similar to The Host.
Further Comments...
I'm a huge fan of all Stephenie Meyer's books, but I probably wouldn't have read Twilight if I hadn't seen the film first and liked it because her narrative was really poor. However, her style has improved a lot since then. Most notably, this is the first book she's published that is written in the third person. I think a lot of readers who disliked her earlier first person work would be pleasantly surprised by The Chemist.
