Summary of this Book...
In the near future, the USA is gone replaced by the Republic of Gildead. Offred finds herself a "Handmaid," a substitute for a wife, required to procreate with her commander. Women are degraded, treated poorly, and are not trained to read. But what happens to Offred when she finds out there is a 'darker' side to Gilead society?
This type of Book is good for...
Pleasure reading, especially if you enjoy Dystopian fiction.
I especially liked...
The "epilogue." It gives the reader hope.
I didn't like...
the misogynist that was depicted, though I thought age appropriate, it's disappointing to think in the future, a society could fall so backward.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
What the TV series on Hulu.
This Book made me feel...
Intrigued by history.
The author of this Book...
Margaret Atwood. Interestingly, she wrote/published the novel in 1985, 32 years ago. I suppose the near future is hear, but I'm glad Gilead is not.
I recommend this Book because...
It makes one think about the future and where you want it to go.
Further Comments...
Atwood gives just enough to paint the setting. She establishes "Offred's" background and the reader finds Offred a sympathetic character. If anything, I wish there was a deeper look into the politics as to why the society fell apart, like you get in Hunger Games. I think the characterization is there, but the lush world around them isn't quite as filled in.

I thought the plot was a little slow and there there was wasn't much suspense though toward the end, the tension is ratcheted up due to Offred's actions.

The author's writing style wasn't easy to read. It forced the reader to slow down.

The length of the book was good. It could have been longer.
