It comes from nowhere, and demands attention.

Impulse

The silver foil Christmas tree
Circled itself and sang a tune,
Ornaments from frayed boxes
December, but weather like June.

Presents under the silver foil tree,
A good many meant for child me,
One day alone, unable to wait,
I opened the box from Granny with haste.

I tried to save the paper
To wrap it back again.
Granny sent me a Barbie doll.
Was immediately my best friend.

I tried to wrap the box
To make it the same again.
But when Mama looked under the tree
My activity was all too plain.

I don't remember a whipping.
But that re-wrapped box I still can see
I gave up a trust to impulse,
Ashamed, that viper still fights to rule me..

Add a decade or two to my lifetime,
Add a drink, a drink, a drink, and a drink.
A splendid time befell me, I would not sink,
Because not until morning would I dare to think.

There were nights in Houston at Elan discotheque,
My girlfriends shined, while I, well-wined, was the too-tall wobbling wreck.
Finding most men ignored me. They were not as tall as my neck.
However, last call often found me paired, accompanied for a dark body check.
