Who is your intended audience? That's who you are accountable to. If your story is pitched to a flock of PhD's in the field in question, then, yeah, a little attention to detail and precision might further their appreciation of the piece. If, however, you're writing to the rest of us, folks who read a story for the "bite," as you put it, you are not only justified in taking whatever liberties necessary to satisfy your readers, as a writer, you are obligated to do so. Your only real task is to keep the reader turning the pages.
