When I was young I knew why I preferred sci-fi. It was about the future and that's what young people care about.
I'm not sure why I still read it. Partly it's nostalgia for those days, I guess. However, the really good writers of old time sci-fi do tell a good story, so it's very entertaining.
But why not a more realistic genre? Because when I read to escape, I want to REALLY escape, and sci-fi and fantasy are about as far away as you can escape to. I have no desire to read stories about how Joe at the MiniMart finally found a girlfiend.
